The island of Brač is the largest central Dalmatian island located opposite Split, the second largest Croatian city. The personality of the island of Brač has been built throughout history. The population of the island was engaged in animal husbandry, forestry, olive growing, viticulture and fishing, and the most important for the island was stone carving. With the opening and exploitation of ancient stone quarries on the island, Brač stone began to be used throughout the Roman Empire, and Brač became a unique center of stone carving and art.
