What Do I Need for Accommodation Categorization?

Accommodation categorization in Croatia is a crucial step for property owners who want to legalize and certify the quality of their services. This guide provides all the essential information about the categorization process, required documentation, and the next steps after obtaining categorization.

Documentation for Categorization

To start the accommodation categorization process, you need to collect the following documentation:

  • A photocopy of a personal document (identity card or passport) of an EU citizen.

  • Proof of property ownership, which includes:

    • Extract from the land registry

    • Written consent of co-owners (if applicable)

    • Written consent of the property owner (if the application is submitted by a family member who is not the owner)

  • Proof of property usability according to the Construction Act, confirming that the property is in use and safe for providing services.

  • Paid fee of 9.29 EUR, which can also be paid electronically.

How to Submit Documentation?

Once you have gathered all the necessary documents, you need to submit them to the State Administration Office for Tourism. If the application complies with all legal regulations, a commission will conduct an on-site inspection of the property. Upon completion of the inspection, you will receive an official categorization confirmation via email and in written form.

Categorization Plate

Once you receive the categorization confirmation, the next step is to place the categorization plate on the property. The plate indicates the category of the property and the number of stars and must be made in accordance with the regulations of the Ministry of Tourism.

Where to Get the Plate?

The plate can be obtained from a manufacturer authorized by the Ministry of Tourism.

TAN List – Mandatory Guest Registration

After obtaining the categorization confirmation, you need to visit the local tourist board to collect the TAN list, which enables you to register guests in your property via the eVisitor system.

Categorizing a Property as a Business or Company

If you want to categorize a property as a business or company, the rules vary depending on whether you are:

  • A non-resident of an EU member state

  • A non-resident of a third country
